Zimmer Stewart Gallery at the Mill Studio in July and August

Herd by Nick Bodimeade

From 15 July to 5 August Zimmer Stewart Gallery present Herd by Nick Bodimeade, a solo exhibition of new South Downs and New Zealand landscape paintings featuring grazing cows.

These works can be seen as a natural progression from the artist's Beach and Woodland series of works.

For a long time Nick Bodimeade has explored the concept of herd mentality: people acting together; forming small groups; creating personal space within the formation.

This has mainly, but not exclusively, been in relation to people on a beach and specifically their way they spread themselves on the often limited space available.

It is the same with cows, the group tends to act together. Each individual chooses behaviour in correspondence with others, whether through imitation or as a response to some external force. Although unstructured, there may be two for more animals which are imitated by the bulk of the herd.

The term herd is often also applied metaphorically to human interactions in social psychology.

Alongside the Herd paintings there will also be some of Nick Bodimeade's Windblow, woodland works like the large Diptych shown below.

The Private View for Herd will be on 15 July from 6-8pm, the exhibition will then be open from 10am-5pm Wednesday to Saturday, 11am-4pm and by appointment at other times.

Nick Bodimeade will give an ‘Artist’s Talk’ in conversation with James Stewart on Sunday 16 July from 3pm.

The discussion will cover Nick's work over the last twenty years, how it has evolved and his teaching. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and join the conversation.

RSVP for the Private View on 15 July or the Artist’s Talk on 16 July

Zimmer Stewart Gallery, celebrating 20 years exhibiting in Sussex in 2023, first showed Nick Bodimeade's work in 2004, their second year. The exhibition that year was called Dogs, Trucks and Sheds. Since then he regularly had solo and participated in group exhibitions at old gallery in Arundel.

See our Exhibitions page for more details about this Talk.

The exhibition will cover works mainly from 2018 to present, but may include a few earlier works, including woodcuts, dry points and etchings.

The exhibition will also include two limited edition books:

·    Wall, Window, World - special deluxe edition of the first survey of Hammick's work. Published in 2015 with text boy Julian Bell exploring the artist's processes, imagery and career to date. This edition of just 60 comes with a three part colour edition variable etching 'Fallout'
